Buckley Space Force Base is the Denver metro's military installation — a Space Force base in Aurora, Colorado, and the site's first Space Force base. If you have orders here you're most likely on the missile-warning mission (the base flies the DSP and SBIRS constellations that watch for missile launches worldwide), but Buckley is a genuinely joint installation: the Space Force host wing shares the fence line with the Colorado Air National Guard's F-16s, a Navy operations support center, and the intelligence community.
This guide covers where to live across the east and south Denver metro, schools, BAH, the high-plains-and-Rockies lifestyle, and the honest tradeoffs.
The base, in brief
Buckley is run by Space Base Delta 2. Its headline tenant is Space Delta 4, which operates the Defense Support Program and Space-Based Infrared System missile-warning satellites and commands the Space Force's missile-warning forces from here. The Colorado Air National Guard's 140th Wing flies the F-16C out of Buckley, the Denver Naval Operations Support Center supports Navy reservists, and the NRO's Aerospace Data Facility-Colorado (the big radomes) is on base. It sits on the east edge of Aurora, close to Denver International Airport.
Your first week at Buckley
Check in with your unit, sort ID/DEERS and gates, and — because "Denver metro" spans a lot of ground — start the where-to-live decision early. The base is in Aurora on the metro's east side; most families weigh the SE Aurora / Centennial / Parker suburbs (below) against the closer-in Aurora neighborhoods. Set up medical, and get familiar with the commute west into Denver and the altitude (Buckley is at roughly 5,400 feet — hydrate, and expect the first couple of weeks to feel it).
The Denver region
You're in the Front Range — high plains right up against the Rocky Mountains. Denver proper is ~10 miles west; the mountains (skiing, hiking, Rocky Mountain National Park) are an hour or two further. It's a four-season, high-altitude, dry-and-sunny climate: real winters with snow, warm summers, and a lot of blue-sky days. Denver International Airport is close for flights home, and the metro has all the big-city amenities and pro sports.
Where to live: commute zones from Buckley
The east and south Denver suburbs trade off commute, schools, and price — from Aurora right around base, to family suburbs like Centennial, Parker, and the Southlands area, out to the newer master-planned communities on the metro's edge. The full "Explore the area" neighborhood breakdowns are coming in the next pass; for now, the map, BAH, and base facts are live so you can start planning.
Gates and access
Buckley runs standard DoD access — bring your ID and confirm your gate and hours with your unit. The base is off East 6th Avenue / Aspen Street in Aurora, with quick access to E-470 and I-225.
School districts
The Denver metro is a patchwork of districts. Near Buckley, the two big ones are Cherry Creek School District 5 (the SE Aurora / Centennial side — highly regarded) and Aurora Public Schools. Which one you're in depends entirely on the address, so pull the specific feeder school before you sign.
BAH and cost of living
Buckley pays the Denver, CO MHA (CO045) for BAH — a higher-cost metro, so it stretches less than a lot of the country. The whole metro (Aurora, Centennial, Parker) is one MHA, so your rate is set by grade + dependents, not the specific suburb. Colorado has a flat state income tax. Pull your exact rate on the BAH page below.
Practical PCS logistics
Plan for altitude and winter: a December/January report date means snow and cold at 5,400 feet. Denver International Airport (DEN) is close for HHG-gap flights, and E-470 (tolled) plus I-225 are the spine of the east metro. If you're driving in over the mountains, check passes and weather.
Your PCS playbook for Buckley
Start your timeline the day orders drop, decide your east/south-metro suburb early (commute vs. schools vs. price), pull your CO045 BAH from the page below, and verify the school feeder for any address.
