NSA Mid-South is a personnel and administrative installation — its "mission" is the people side of the Navy. More than 7,500 military, civilian, and contract personnel work here, making it one of the largest single employers in Tennessee. It sits in Millington, a small city about 20 miles north of downtown Memphis in Shelby County. The base has deep roots: it began as Park Field (a WWI flight-training camp in 1917), grew into NAS Memphis through the Cold War, and was later realigned into the personnel-focused NSA Mid-South.

Check in with your command, sort your ID/DEERS and the gates, and — because the Memphis metro spreads across a dozen suburbs and school districts — start the where-to-live decision early. On-base housing and the housing office are the first stop; most families end up in Millington itself or one of the eastern suburbs (Bartlett, Arlington, Collierville, Lakeland) depending on schools and commute.
The Mid-South region
You're in the Memphis metro, on the Tennessee side of the Mississippi River near where Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi meet. It's an affordable, spread-out metro with a big-city core (Beale Street, the Grizzlies, Graceland, world-famous barbecue) and a lot of suburban and semi-rural space around it. Tennessee has no state income tax, which stretches a paycheck. The tradeoff is the weather: hot, humid summers and a genuine severe-storm and tornado season in spring.

Gates and access
NSA Mid-South runs standard DoD access — bring your ID, and confirm your specific gate and hours with your command. The base is off Navy Road / Singleton Parkway in Millington, with US-51 and I-40/I-240 the spines of the wider metro.
On-base life — services and family programs

School districts
The Memphis metro is a patchwork of school districts — Millington Municipal Schools right by the base, the large Shelby County Schools, and the suburban municipal districts (Bartlett, Arlington, Collierville, Lakeland) that many military families target for the eastern suburbs. Which one you're in depends entirely on the town and address — pull the specific feeder school before you sign.
BAH and cost of living
