USCG Base Portsmouth is the Coast Guard's major footprint in Hampton Roads — home to Coast Guard Atlantic Area (LANTAREA) headquarters, Sector Virginia, the Coast Guard Finance Center (FINCEN), and a cluster of tenant commands. LANTAREA is one of the Coast Guard's two area commands, running operations across the eastern half of the globe, so a tour here is as likely to be a staff or headquarters job as an operational one.
For a Coast Guard family, the good news is that you're moving into one of the largest, most established military regions in the country — the same Hampton Roads metro that supports a half-dozen Navy and joint bases. The thing to plan for early: there's no on-base family housing here, so you'll be house-hunting on the local market like most Hampton Roads families.
The base, in brief
Base Portsmouth sits on the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, providing the personnel, facilities, and logistics support for the Coast Guard commands in the area — most prominently LANTAREA HQ and Sector Virginia (the operational command for the region's waterways), along with the Finance Center that runs Coast Guard-wide pay and accounting. On base you'll find a Coast Guard Exchange (CGX) and the usual support services; for a full-size grocery, Coast Guard families use the nearby Navy commissaries (the Norfolk Naval Shipyard commissary is right in Portsmouth, with NS Norfolk close by).
Where to live
Because there's no on-base housing, where Coast Guard families live in Hampton Roads is the same decision the Navy families make — and we cover it in depth. Portsmouth itself (Olde Towne, Churchland, Western Branch) is closest to base and generally affordable; many families also look across the region to Chesapeake, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and the Norfolk neighborhoods, trading commute for space, schools, or lifestyle. The whole metro is a single Norfolk Military Housing Area for BAH.
Use the surrounding-area guides for the honest, neighborhood-by-neighborhood read, and drive your commute across the Portsmouth tunnels and bridges before you sign — the Hampton Roads water crossings are the region's defining commute factor.
Gates and access
The base has controlled access off Coast Guard Boulevard in Portsmouth, with the main vehicle gate + visitor control there. Hours and the visitor-pass process are handled at the gate / Pass & ID — confirm the current setup with your sponsor.
BAH, schools, and logistics
- BAH: the Norfolk MHA rate applies (Hampton Roads is one housing area). Pull current rates from defensetravel.dod.mil/site/bahCalc.cfm and compare against a target rent in the BAH Budget tool.
- Schools: depend on where you land — Portsmouth Public Schools if you live in the city, or one of the neighboring districts. Pull the specific school at GreatSchools.
- The move itself: the 10-stage guide applies the same to a Coast Guard PCS — entitlements, DITY/PPM, and the first-week settling checklist. Browse the guide here.
