Bainbridge is the premium play in Kitsap — a forested island with a walkable town (Winslow), some of the best public schools in Washington, and a 35-minute ferry to downtown Seattle. For a Navy family that can swing it, it's hard to beat; just go in clear-eyed about the price and the island logistics.
What it's actually like, day one
Bainbridge is green, water-wrapped, and unhurried. Winslow is the walkable heart — cafes, a farmers market, wineries — and the rest of the island is forest, trails, and waterfront homes. You reach the bases by driving north over the bridge through Poulsbo on SR-305, or you take the ferry east to Seattle for a weekend. The schools are the other magnet: Bainbridge Island School District is routinely near the top of the state rankings.
The tradeoff
You pay for all of it. Bainbridge is the most expensive corner of Kitsap, and the base commute — while reasonable to Bremerton or Bangor — isn't the shortest in the county. Island life also means one bridge and ferry schedules; most people love it, but it's a real adjustment.
Verify before you sign
Confirm the specific school, get a real rent/price read for the exact area (it varies a lot island to shoreline), and drive the SR-305 commute to your base at your report time before you commit.
