NAS North Island — the heart of Naval Base Coronado — is the birthplace of naval aviation and a Pacific Fleet aircraft-carrier homeport. It sits on the north tip of the Coronado peninsula, across San Diego Bay from downtown. If your orders are to a carrier air wing, a helicopter squadron, or a North Island shore command, this is your base.
This guide covers the base and its services, plus the honest San Diego housing reality — Coronado itself is one of the priciest zip codes in the country, so where you actually live is a real decision. Your sponsor and command own your specific squadron details.
The base, in brief
Naval Base Coronado is an umbrella command spanning NAS North Island (the airfield + carrier piers), Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (the Silver Strand amphib/SEAL base — its own page on this site), and several outlying sites. North Island home-ports Pacific Fleet carriers and the West Coast helicopter squadrons, with the maintenance and support commands that go with them. It connects to the mainland by the Coronado Bridge and the Silver Strand (SR-75).
Where to live
Here's the honest part: Coronado island itself is beautiful and very expensive. Some senior families make it work, but most North Island sailors live off-island and commute across the bridge or up the Strand — in the South Bay (Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach), central/coastal San Diego, or wherever their budget and BAH land them. San Diego is in a single Military Housing Area with one of the highest BAH rates in the Navy — because it's one of the most expensive markets in the country. Our Naval Base San Diego guide breaks the regional housing picture down (we're building Coronado-specific neighborhood reads next). Drive the bridge/Strand commute at rush hour before you sign anything.
On-base life — services
- Commissary + Navy Exchange: a full DeCA commissary and a NEX on North Island.
- Fitness: the VADM Martin Fitness Center on base.
- Medical: Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa) is the regional military hospital + TRICARE Prime hub; a branch clinic handles routine care.
- Child care: apply early via MilitaryChildCare.com — San Diego waitlists are long.
Gates and access
North Island's main gates are off 4th Street / Alameda Boulevard on Coronado. Hours and the visitor-pass process are handled at Pass & ID — your sponsor will tell you the current main gate and which one your command uses.
BAH, schools, and logistics
BAH is the San Diego MHA rate — pull current numbers from defensetravel.dod.mil/site/bahCalc.cfm, and budget honestly for the cost of living. Schools depend entirely on where you live (Coronado Unified on the island; San Diego Unified, Sweetwater, and others off-island) — pull the specific school at GreatSchools. The 10-stage moving guide applies the same here.
